Male pelvic medicine has been around for thousands of years, and there are some good reasons to be wary of prescribing it to men who have had their health problems treated by women.1,2 A common misconception about male pelvic therapy is that it’s the only way to treat your pelvic pain, says Dr. Kevin O’Connell, PhD, from the University of Arizona, Tucson, who is an expert in male pelvic health.

In reality, there are a number of ways to treat pelvic pain in men, O’Connel says.

One of them is to use the pelvic floor exercises that are most often used by women for pelvic floor pain.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that men should not skip or reduce physical activity during pregnancy or lactation.7 Exercise is an important part of the overall wellness plan for men and women, says Michael J. Fesner, MD, a board-certified pelvic medicine specialist from New York’s NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, and chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the Mayo Clinic.
