A lot of men, and women, don’t really want a baby.
But the guys who do want one can’t be expected to be the ones to do it right.
A new study out of the University of Pennsylvania suggests that the manliest of them are just as likely as the guys with the most money and most disposable income to have a baby via assisted reproduction.
According to the study, which was presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Annual Meeting, the researchers found that men who had the least experience with conception and assisted reproduction were most likely to have had a baby through IVF or surrogate mothering.
“This is a big deal,” said Dr. Daniel Zagorski, who led the study and a professor at the University at Buffalo’s Center for Reproduction Research and Education.
“The guys with better reproductive skills, they’re more likely to be able to conceive.”
While the study didn’t specifically explore assisted reproduction in a man’s life, the results were consistent.
Researchers looked at the number of children born via assisted reproductive technology and found that those who had a lot of money and disposable income were more likely than the average to have babies via assisted abortion.
“[They’re] more likely because they’re willing to do more,” Zagicleski said.
“But they’re also more likely in a financial sense, because they’ve got more disposable income.”
“It’s just an indication that the men who are the wealthiest are more likely, as a group, to have assisted reproductive [products],” Zaggerski said of the study.
The researchers also found that older men who were the most likely, or the most financially secure, to be assisted with conception were also the most at risk.
They also found a higher risk of miscarriage, which can lead to infertility, in women over 40.
“It would be very important for the general public to have more information about this issue,” Zegerski said about the research.
“Because assisted reproduction is such a big issue for older people, there are a lot more people who are concerned about it.”
“We want to make sure that men have access to this knowledge, but they’re not going to be making decisions about this for their own benefit,” he added.
“It’s something that men and women need to be talking about.”
Zaggersks study, called “How to Make a Baby with Your Dick,” was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
