Indian doctors say their new marijuana-based drug, called M-Cures, is able to treat depression, anxiety and other mood disorders.
M-Cure is based on the chemical compound THC, which is the main ingredient in marijuana.
It is the first marijuana-derived drug to be approved for human clinical trials by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said Dr. R.R. Naidu, the director of the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at the University of California, San Francisco.
Marijuana-derived drugs like M-Cs are being tested in the United States and Europe, Naidus said.
The drugs, he said, are safer than the drugs that have been used to treat severe pain, nausea and seizures.
Mishra, a doctor at a government-run dispensary in New Delhi, told CNN the medicine can relieve symptoms in up to 80 percent of patients with depression and other symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia and insomnia-related psychosis.
“This is a very novel therapeutic approach for treating depression, as well as anxiety and psychotic disorders,” he said.
Mihir Shah, a member of India’s National Commission for Medical Research, said M-cures is safe, well tolerated and does not interfere with patients’ ability to work.
Shah said the drug was approved for sale in India in November.
“It has been approved by FDA for clinical trials in the U., and in Europe.
There is a possibility that M-Calves could be commercially available in the next few months,” Shah said.
Naidus called M,Cures’ potential as a medicine a “huge achievement.”
“This drug is extremely potent.
The body produces less THC, so the dose is not so high that patients cannot take it,” he told CNN.
“But it is not a drug that can replace a doctor’s prescription.”
India’s government says more than 50 million Indians have tried M-calves, and the drug is used by some 6 million people in India and Pakistan. In the U
